Bombers CrossFit Member Spotlight

Meet Pilar Mavron, this hard-working mother of two has an infectious positive attitude and will happily carry on a conversation with you before, during, or after a workout.  Pilar is an amazing example to those around her.  She has made tremendous progress throughout her time at Bombers CrossFit, and we are truly excited to see where her journey continues.

1. How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first experience?

—I first heard about CF through my husband and also through being an Air Force recruiter. My husband started doing it years ago when we were stationed in California. When we moved to Illinois he hurt himself doing it. So I stayed away. That’s also when I started engaging with different CF gyms in regard to my recruiting duties. Then, we moved here to Ohio and Chris worked with head coach, Greg K. It made me feel a little better that Chris, my husband, knew the Head Coach, but I was definitely super intimated and nervous about going. It’s been life changing ever since and I am so happy I decided to come in that very first day!

2. When did you first come to Bombers CrossFit?

—I believe it was April or May, 2016. Most people remember their first workout. I honestly don’t remember at all. I think I was just overwhelmed with it all. Chris was already going for about a month by that time, so I just ended signing up after that first day! For about the first year I think I may have only come 3-4 times a week. After that I was getting better all around and felt more comfortable being there. It then became a routine to really try to make six days a week! I am so happy I stuck with it!!

3. How many days do you CrossFit?

—Most weeks it’s 6days; Unless life gets in the way and I have to miss a day or two in the gym. If that happens I really try to do something quick at home. We finally purchased a rowing machine a few months back! Trying for that million!!

4. What classes do you normally take?

—I’ll range anywhere from the 3:30pm to the 6:30pm classes. It all depends on my kids schedule and when I get out of work. I’ve tried the AM classes to mostly hangout with friends... I mean workout with them, haha! But that was like a handful or times. I’m a night owl so waking up in the morning isn’t happening. Plus, I guess a legit excuse right now could be that my husband is deployed and I can’t leave my little kids at home alone. So I stick with my afternoon family.

5. What motivates you/keeps you coming back to Bombers CrossFit?

—Definitely the community of friends who are more like my family! My kids are welcome there and it really has become our second home. Additionally, I have just made it a part of my routine to make sure I get there, so I feel out of wack if I miss a day.

6. What’s your favorite thing about the Dayton area?

—Ok, the first thing that is coming to mind is Greater’s Ice Cream, haha!! Is that bad?! They are my kids favorite place at the moment. At least once a week visit. But of course, our Bombers CrossFit is the best! We are PCSing soon and I’ve heard stories about how no other box will compare to your first box! I’ll give others a chance, but I’m so sad that it’s most likely a true statement. Like I mentioned, Bombers is our second family!

7. What accomplishment are you the proudest of (inside and outside of the gym)?

—Inside the gym would be getting my pull-ups for the first time! Even though they are kipping for now. I was just so surprised when I got one, then two, and now the most I’ve ever done in a row was 22! Incredible when it use to hurt just holding on to the bar. As Coach Greg always says, ‘Wrap those thumbs.’ I used to block that out when he said it cause it hurt. Over time, it made sense and it really is the most efficient way to do them! —Outside the gym would be that within a three year period I have changed the lives of almost 200 people as they enlisted into the US Air Force. It’s incredible thinking back to each of them, but I’m so honored that I was able to do that for them, their families, and the US Air Force!

8. After a hard workout, what is your favorite meal?

—Does a can of FitAid count?! Just kidding. I like to eat some fruit and meat. Typically apples, bananas, or grapefruit paired with chicken or steak!

9. What are some of your interests outside of CrossFit?

—Spending time with friends and family, helping/volunteering whenever possible, and traveling.

10. What is one goal within the gym that you’re working on?

—My current goals are: #255 back squat, #275 deadlift, #160 clean and jerk, #125 snatch, and #200 front squat. Along with completing 50 unbroken wall-balls at #14 and 5 unbroken Rx kipping handstand push-ups. BUT if I had to pick one, then it would be to snatch #125!!

11. What impact has CrossFit had on your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?

—I went in thinking I was fit, but when someone added #10s to my bar I was smoked! That was #55 and I couldn’t hang! It was a rude awakening as to how out of shape I had become. Now I have those goals I stated above and it’s incredible. I use to get off work, come home, and do my parental duties as a mother. I loved it, but I didn’t take care of me. I made the excuse of having to take care of my family instead of doing anything physical. I was unhappy and did not like my appearance at all!! I didn’t like the mirror or the scale. I really believe it hindered the way I would act toward my kids and husband. Once I added CF into my life...I found myself again. That fun, competitive, and driven person I use to be when I was active growing up and into my early 20’s! My kids are more active, I’ve had friends and family start CF because of my love for it, and overall I am that happy active person again! I can’t say enough positive things that it has done to me and for my family!

12. What advice would you give to a newbie?

-It’s okay to be scared, intimated, nervous, and all those other emotions that run through your head when you think about starting your new journey through CrossFit. But stick it out! You can do anything for 30-60 days! Because after that, if you do it consistently and try to give it your all everyday, then you’ll make it your routine. You may even become a little addicted to coming and that is perfectly fine! I have FOMO most days too! Everyone started out in your shoes! Enjoy the journey!
