If you and your spouse have decided to divorce, it's time to start looking for an attorney. Part of this involves attending consultations and getting the attorney's input on your case. It is crucial to be as prepared as possible for these consultations so you can give the lawyer a realistic picture of your situation and its challenges. To help you get ready, below are five essential items to bring with you.

What to Bring to a Divorce Consultation

1. Legal Documents

divorceTake the time to gather and organize all legal documents relating to the marriage. Compile prenuptial and separation agreements, birth certificates and Social Security numbers of children born during the union.  All of this documentation sheds more light on what you're dealing with and how long the divorce process could take.

2. Tax Returns

Bring at least a three years' worth of income tax returns to your consultation. Even if you did not file jointly, an attorney will want to see your income levels and any changes from year to year. Tax returns can better establish whether and how much spousal or child support will need to be paid or received.

3. Pay Stubs

Similar to tax returns, pay stubs will tell a lawyer how much money you bring in on a regular basis. Share stubs from the last year. If at all possible, have copies of your spouse's pay stubs as well.

4. Evidence

Many states are no-fault divorce states, which means that couples filing for divorce are not required to provide evidence as to why the union failed. In Ohio, divorce filers have the option of choosing no-fault or fault grounds. In cases of the latter, you will have to submit a reason for the split and evidence that supports that reasoning. If you are divorcing because of spousal abuse, bring copies of protective orders to your consultation. If you're divorcing because of adultery, bring copies of corroborating emails or photos. In other words: any evidence that will back up your claim.

5. Questions

Any divorce comes with questions. There are practical considerations to be tended to, such as how temporary child custody will be arranged and who will stay in the house and who will move out. There are also legal complexities to iron out and understand. Be sure to make a list of questions pertaining to your situation; you'll appreciate the peace of mind that comes from meeting with a lawyer who can provide answers and solutions.
