There are a lot of tasks to be done before moving and storage, and cleaning out the refrigerator is one that sometimes gets overlooked. It’s easy to forget to remove all of the food and clean the interior of your fridge when there are so many boxes to be packed, labeled, and organized. Trying to move an appliance stocked full of food is never a good idea. Consider these reasons why as well as how you can prep your fridge for moving day.

Why & How You Should Prepare a Fridge for Moving & Storage

Why It’s Important

Even if you are moving across town and plan to take your refrigerator with you, you shouldn’t’ t leave food in the appliance during transport. Most foods risk spoiling and contamination if they’re not stored at specific temperatures.

Once you’ve emptied your refrigerator for a big move, you should also take time to thoroughly clean it using a bacteria-killing cleaner. This will help prevent contamination once you restock your fridge at your new home.

How You Should Prepare

Start by emptying out your fridge. If you are unable to consume all of the food on your own, consider donating it to friends and family or your local soup kitchen. If you want to take some of the foods with you, you’ll need a cooler capable of transporting it all.

Next, it’s time to defrost the unit, which can take up to 24 hours. Place towels on the floor around the appliance while you wait. Once defrosting is complete, use a non-abrasive cleaner to wipe all surfaces inside the unit. Afterward, remove all shelves, drawers, and loose parts. These should be packed separately for moving and storage.
