Your pet can break a toenail while playing or getting one caught and pulling away. This hurts, so you will probably see limping, licking at the foot, and possibly some bleeding. When this happens, however, there’s no need to panic. Here’s the first aid you need to know.

What You Can Safely Try at Home

As carefully as possible, take a look at the broken nail. Gently wash away blood and dirt with warm water. If your pet is especially jumpy, you might need someone else to hold and soothe them while you do this. Then, if you feel comfortable, use nail clippers to take off the hanging portion. This should relieve the pain your furry friend is in, but be careful – don’t cut across the whole nail if the central quick is still in place. Your veterinarian can do this step if your pet is painful or the cracked portion is large. Next, stop the bleeding with the help of some styptic powder or cornstarch. Leave the paw open to the air – if you think a bandage is needed to stop the bleeding then call your veterinarian.

When You Should See a Veterinarian

veterinarianSince the nails are attached to the bones of your pet’s toes, it’s usually a good idea to visit the veterinarian after they break one just to make sure they are okay. However, there are a few times this is a must. If your pet appears to be in severe pain, such as if they are biting or hyperventilating, don’t try to remove the nail yourself. If the toe is swollen then they definitely need to see the vet. Additionally, if the bleeding won’t stop, your pet will also require professional care. It’s perfectly okay to call and schedule an appointment if you’re nervous you’ll hurt the animal more by trying to fix the nail yourself.
