Since cockroaches are largely nocturnal, spotting them can sometimes be a challenge. To tell if you have a cockroach infestation and the need for pest control services, it’s often much easier to look for some of the telltale signs that these crafty little insects are present, even when the roaches themselves are not immediately visible.

3 Indicators of Cockroach Infestations

1. Roach Droppings

Different types of cockroaches produce different sizes and shapes of droppings, but all of them will leave their feces in plain sight. Sometimes the droppings may look like nothing more than a tiny scattering of black pepper; others may resemble coffee grounds. With larger roaches, small pellets are left behind. While these stools might be left anywhere, they will be especially evident in the places cockroaches prefer to frequent, such as along baseboards, under furniture, in cabinets, and in other dark or moist places.

2. Egg Cases

pest controlCockroaches are prolific breeders, which is why infestations can quickly grow out of hand. They drop single, brownish-colored, oblong cases that can contain dozens of tiny eggs. Most often, they will affix these cases to dark and out-of-the-way places, like inside books, between cracks in walls, and inside furniture. If you notice even one egg case, contact a pest control service promptly for removal.

3. An Oily, Musty Odor

Cockroaches have identifiable aromas. The stench lingers, and the more roaches there are, the stronger the smell will be. Pest control professionals typically describe the odor as oily, musty, and powerful. If roaches are present in a kitchen or dining room, the food consumed in these areas might also take on a noticeably different taste.
