Tires that have healthy tread levels will securely grip the pavement beneath them. However, as tread starts to wear down, your car may no longer handle properly, putting you at an increased risk of hydroplaning, colliding with another vehicle, or running off the road. Here are a few ways to assess the tread of your tires and determine if you need replacements.

3 Smart Ways to Test Tire Tread

Use a Depth Gauge

Purchase a depth gauge from your local auto supply retailer, and use it to evaluate your tread. Simply push the device into one of the grooves of your tires, and hold it until a result shows up on the screen. As a general rule, if your tread depth is less than 2/32 of an inch deep, you should replace your tires ASAP to ensure your safety while driving.

Look at Indicator Bars

Most tires have indicator bars built directly into the tread. When your tread levels are normal, you likely won’t even see these bars at all. However, as your tires go bald, you’ll begin to observe the raised bars in their grooves. When your tread reaches the same level as the indicator bars, you can be certain that you need new tires.

tiresDo the Penny Test

Another easy method for evaluating tread depth is by putting a penny between the grooves. Place it in the groove sideways, with the head facing downwards. If your tread is at a normal level, you probably won’t see Lincoln’s head at all. On the other hand, if you do see any part of his head, you’ll need tire replacements soon.
