Residents of Hawaii must take precautions to prepare for hurricane season, which runs from June to November. For families with pets, have preparations in place to ensure four-legged family members are safe, too. The pet hospital staff at Waipio Pet Clinic in Waipahu, HI, have some practical hurricane preparation tips to share with local pet owners.

5 Ways to Prepare for Hurricane Season, According to a Pet Hospital

1. Bring Them Inside

Some pets—cats especially—may spend most of their time outdoors. When there’s a hurricane on the forecast, however, get all pets indoors and keep them inside until the storm has passed. This can keep them protected from downed trees, floods, and other weather-related dangers.

2. Create a Comfortable Space

3. Identify Nearby Shelters

If your pet gets out during the storm, you may be able to locate them sooner if you’ve already identified your local shelters. Keep a list of contact information for animal rescue groups, shelters, and veterinarian’s offices in the area so you’ll never have to worry about performing hasty research if you need to track down your animal.

4. Have an Emergency Kit on Hand

The Humane Society recommends stocking up on food and water for at least five days, sturdy leashes, and carriers to weather a storm of any magnitude. For dog owners, have a vehicle restraint system, such as a car harness. If your pet takes medications, make sure you have enough to get through a few extra days, if needed.

5. Make Sure Your Pet Has Identification

Finally, make sure your pet has a sturdy collar with an identification tag listing your updated contact information. For an even stronger layer of defense, consider microchipping your pet if you haven’t already. Veterinary care centers and animal shelters check animals for chips when they are turned in, so this simple tactic can help ensure your pet is returned safely should they ever run away.
