Ohio residents with loved ones in a nursing home have had to adjust their visitation plans over the past year. However, the state has recently updated their policies to allow more people to see loved ones. Here’s what you should know before visiting loved ones.

Updated Nursing Home Visitation Guidelines

This spring, the Ohio Department of Health began requiring nursing homes to permit visitation when safety protocols, like mask wearing and social distancing, can be met. Visitation had previously been permitted but wasn’t a requirement.

The new guidelines also allow physical touch between vaccinated individuals, allow visitors in residents’ private rooms, and allow visits of more than 30 minutes. However, visitors are still required to make appointments, wear masks, and undergo a screening upon entry.

The Importance of Visiting Loved Ones

Visiting loved ones in person provides a deeper connection than a phone call or video chat. You can spend time talking, playing games, seeing their environment, and playing games or doing fun hobbies together. Socializing with others can also lower the risks of depression related to isolation. Visits can help them feel more connected and provide variety to their days.

How to Make Your Visit Meaningful

If you’re planning to visit a loved one in an Ohio nursing home for the first time this year, make it memorable for them by planning their favorite activities. For example, make their favorite meal or bring a puzzle or board game you can play together. You might even bring gifts, like personalized photo frames decorated by their grandkids. Take photos from the visit and send them later or bring them during your next in-person visit.
