In the early 1990s, a young gymnast from San Diego was searching for an exercise solution that would target all areas of his body using a variety of training methods. More than 20 years later, the technique has made its way around the globe to help women and men create customized physiques. Based in Dayton, OH, Bombers CrossFit® has become the area’s premier center for the high-intensity fitness model. Here, we share how CrossFit® got its start.

The Roots of CrossFit

How It Came to Be

Greg Glassman spent hours in the gym each day sculpting his body to compete as a teenage gymnast. Unfortunately, his workouts weren’t giving him the strength he desired. Through trial and error, Greg developed a multi-pronged approach that emphasizes muscle power in key areas such as arms, legs, and the core abdomen. By combining several fitness activities, he discovered how this combination provided the overall strength he was seeking.

What Tools Were Initially Used

An avid athlete, Greg loved bicycling, weightlifting, and other physical activities. He combined these activities using bikes, barbells, and other sports equipment for a general body workout. The tools helped shape and contour where it was needed, added bulk where it was desired, and increased core strength.

Gym Opening Tests New CrossFit Model

In 1995, Greg opened a gym in Southern California and also became the official trainer for the Santa Cruz Police Department. He used his newly developed CrossFit model with the cadets and veteran officers, who were impressed by their unique body results. As word of mouth spread about Greg’s training method, his clientele list began to grow. Today, CrossFit remains among the top choices for comprehensive fitness. Gyms and personal trainers worldwide continue to use the method for people seeking strength, agility, and overall body muscle.

Bombers CrossFit is an avid advocate of the physical training solution. One of our gym’s co-owners is a former Air Force  B-52 bomber pilot who understands the importance of body strength. We invite everyone, including military personnel from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, to come in for customized training solutions.
