Taking tests can be stressful and intimidating, but only if you aren’t properly prepared. By taking the right steps beforehand, you can streamline your test-taking day and walk away confident in your score. Here are a few crucial do’s and don’ts for the day before a big test, and why it pays to consider professional tutoring.

Do:

Brush up on the material.

tutoringBefore you sit down to take that big test, brush up on the material. Go through each concept that you know will be on the test, and practice rewriting the concepts on a separate sheet of paper. Compare your notes to the text so you can see where you need to continue studying. Consider heading in for professional tutoring the week before the exam to talk about the material with someone new. Sometimes a little supplemental quizzing can help people feel more confident.

Pack your bags.

Make sure you have everything you’ll need for the big test by packing your bags the night before. Review class notes to see if your instructor gave specific instructions for the day of the test, such as bringing scratch paper or starting the exam by a certain time in the testing center. If the test is long, pack a few snacks to munch on before you head into the test.

Don’t:

Pull an all-nighter.

Although it might seem smart to cram as much as possible before the exam, pulling an all-nighter is a recipe for disaster. In addition to becoming overly tired, cramming can also lead to confusion about the subject material, which is why you should focus on getting a great night’s sleep before your test.

Take new medications.

Avoid taking any new medications the day and night before an exam, including sleeping aids, allergy medications, and pain pills. Since you don’t know how your body will react to new medicines, avoiding them will help you prevent problems like fatigue, illness, and medical emergencies. Instead, focus on eating right and getting enough sleep for the test, so you feel your best.
