If you’re planning for a move or sending items through the mail, you’ll want to make sure any breakable items are well-protected during transportation. Valuables like china and glassware are exceptionally delicate and demand protective packing materials as well as the right packaging techniques to ensure maximum safety. These helpful tips will help you wrap these fragile items so they’ll arrive in one piece.

Protecting Glassware From Point A to Point B

1. Wrap Pieces Individually

packing materialsWhether it’s your collection of glassware or coveted china, every piece you own that’s deemed fragile should be wrapped on its own. When items are grouped together without being packed individually, they’re more likely to get jostled against one another and break. China plates, bowls, and pitchers should be wrapped in bubble wrap and secured with tape. Complete the same process for glassware, but also fill the inside of the glasses with packing material to enhance its sturdiness. Avoid newspaper because it can smudge glassware and fine china.

2. Box Items & Fill in Gaps

Once each item is secured, pack like items together, placing the largest items on the bottom and smaller ones atop them. Instead of laying plates flat, stand them sideways and add layers of packing peanuts or similar packing materials in between each. For glassware, place each piece upright and fill in gaps between them. Add an additional layer of bubble wrap, cardboard, or a material of your choice to the top of the box for further reinforcement.

3. Secure & Label the Box

To minimize the risk of any objects becoming loose, make sure your container is well-secured. Avoid using old boxes with worn cardboard and instead opt for sturdy, new shipping containers or moving boxes. Secure the flaps using packing tape, and add another row of tape in the opposite direction as an extra precaution. Don’t forget to label the box “fragile” on all visible sides.
