Staying warm in winter is important – but so are conserving energy and keeping heating costs down. There are a few easy ways you can prepare your HVAC system for optimal efficiency to save your pennies this season. Below are five tips to try this year.

How to Lower Heating Bills

1. Program the Thermostat

Take advantage of programmable digital thermostats to adjust temperatures based on time of day. Have your HVAC system set for a lower temperature when no one is home so energy isn’t wasted on an empty house. Do the same overnight when your warm, cozy bed will keep you warm. Try to keep waking hour settings moderate, or around 68 to 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Cover Drafts

For windows that are particularly drafty, invest in clear plastic sheets from a home or hardware store and tape them inside the frames to create a barrier. Make sure the plastic is heavy-duty and that the tape has a tight seal, so energy from your heater stays inside.

3. Seal Gaps

HVACIf your doors and windows have gaps, cracks, and holes, energy is leaking out, making it harder for your HVAC system to maintain your preferred temperature. Caulk these areas or apply weatherstripping to create a seal that warm air cannot penetrate. Also inspect other areas where air may be escaping, such as chimneys, pipes, and plumbing fixtures.

4. Use the Sun

The sun radiates heat, even in winter. Open curtains on the southern side of your home to let in as much sunshine as possible throughout the day. Once the sun has set, close them to keep the heat inside. Choose heavier drapes for winter months to ensure less energy seeps out.

5. Inspect Your HVAC System

A well-maintained HVAC unit is more efficient than a neglected one. Make sure your furnace is serviced annually to clean components, change filters, and ensure each area is working well. HVAC technicians will check for any impending trouble and perform preventive maintenance to keep your heater running well all season.
