Driving in the winter requires some extra care and attention to stay safe on the road. Unfortunately, icy roads and low visibility increase the number of severe auto collisions on the road each winter. Luckily, with a bit of preparation, you can avoid harm and arrive safely at your destination. Here are three tips to help you navigate the roads in winter driving conditions.

How to Drive Safely in Winter

1. Drive Slower

Rushing from place to place on slick winter roads can lead to accidents and other dangerous situations. The best way to avoid an auto collision and keep yourself safe when driving in winter is to drive slow. Slowing down will give you better tire traction and make it easier to control your vehicle on icy roads. For example, in snowy and icy conditions, you should apply the gas slowly to avoid skids. Similarly, when approaching a stoplight, give yourself ample time to slow down while avoiding slick spots.

2. Know Your Car’s Features

Newer car models often have up-to-date technological features, such as driving assist and rear-facing cameras, to help keep you safer on the roads and avoid auto collisions. Be sure to check your car’s manual to see what kinds of safety features are implemented in your vehicle to help you navigate wintry conditions. If you have any of these features, check them before driving to clear away any snow or ice that could keep them from working correctly.

3. Notify Others

Even when you take all the safety precautions, wintry roads can still be dangerous and lead to accidents. If you’re planning to drive a long distance in wintry conditions, make sure someone knows that you’re out on the road. Let them know what route you’ll be taking, where you’re going, and when you think you’ll get there. If you get stuck in the snow or become part of an auto collision and are unable to reach out for help, they can send help along your route when you don’t arrive at the specified time.
