The Gulf area of Texas is warm and humid, an ideal environment for many insects, including mosquitoes. Not only are their bites annoying, but these pests can also spread disease. As such, if you're dealing with an excess of these insects at your home, you may need professional mosquito control to reduce the number on your property. In the meantime, here's what you can do to avoid bites.

What Are Some Effective Mosquito Control Practices?

1. Eliminate Breeding Grounds

Reduce your exposure to mosquitoes by eliminating the places they breed. The insects lay eggs in stagnant water, so keep your gutters clean and free of debris to prevent water from pooling in the troughs.

Remove or empty birdbaths, old tires, trash cans, plant pots and saucers, and other items that hold rainwater. Additionally, make sure you clean and change the water in pet dishes and wading pools every few days.

2. Spray and Cover Your Body

When outdoors, wear long pants, shoes, and long-sleeved shirts made of breathable materials. This clothing will protect you from stinging insects while helping you stay cool. Additionally, spray exposed skin with aerosol mosquito repellent.

You can also use natural oils to repel the insects from your body, such as lemongrass, citronella, cedar, lavender, eucalyptus, or soybean. All of these work by masking your scent, particularly the carbon dioxide (CO2) in your breath and lactic acid in your sweat.

3. Avoid Mosquito-Prone Areas

Stay away from areas where mosquitoes are likely to be prevalent. These spots include shady and overgrown outdoor areas, particularly where the ground is marshy or stays damp most of the day. This precaution is especially important during mornings and evenings, when the bugs are most active. Mosquitoes tend to avoid direct sunlight since extended exposure can dehydrate and kill them.
