Found throughout state parks and other natural areas, the white-tailed deer is one of Ohio’s most treasured forms of wildlife. While these animals are enjoyable to spot in the wild, they can present serious hazards when crossing the road. Driving with caution—especially in areas where deer crossings are posted—can help minimize the risk of an auto collision, but accidents can still happen. To ensure that you stay safe and minimize damage to your vehicle, here are a few tips to follow after you’ve hit a deer on the road.

How to Respond if You Hit a Deer With Your Car

1. Retreat With Caution

Immediately after the accident, assess your condition and that of any passengers with you. If needed, call 911 for emergency medical help.

If everyone is safe, turn on your car’s hazards and slowly reverse away from the deer. Do not try to touch the deer, as it may still be alive and could act aggressively. Once you’re separated, move your vehicle to a safe side of the road away from traffic and mark the area with flares or emergency reflectors.

2. Alert the Authorities

Call the police to let them know you’ve been in an auto collision with a deer and need instructions on what to do. Depending on the extent of the accident, officers may arrive at the scene to complete an official accident report. If necessary, they will contact animal control services to humanely manage the injured deer.

3. Document the Damage

In addition to the police accident report, it’s a good idea to document the accident as much as possible. Take photos and videos of the damage, as well as the road conditions, to provide visual evidence of the accident for your auto insurance company when you go to file a claim.

4. Call a Tow Truck

Hitting a deer can severely damage the front end of a vehicle. Even if there is minimal visible body damage, hidden problems may exist that make the vehicle dangerous to drive. To stay safe, contact a tow truck to transport your vehicle to a nearby auto body shop.
