While the return of warm weather is exciting for anyone who owns a swimming pool, the first sign of higher temperatures doesn’t automatically mean that it’s safe to jump in the water. It’s important to go through a strict pool opening process to ensure that the structure is safe to use and the water is clean and free of pollutants. Here's what this service entails.

What Should You Do First?

Before a technician arrives to begin the opening process, clear away any debris that might be present on the pool’s cover. Do the same with any standing water. This will simplify your technician’s process, making it easier for them to remove and dry the cover for safekeeping during the swimming season.

How Is the Filter Treated?

At this stage, any plugs will be reattached to the filter. The average swimming pool pump includes two plugs at minimum, while a filter tank has at least one. Then, plugs placed in the pool’s returns will be removed and replaced with the eyeballs.

If there are any skimmer plugs in place, those will also be pulled away at this time. Then, it’s time to turn on the electricity to the pool. Your technician will use the power to restore the filter system. They’ll test it to make sure that water flows through it properly and that there are no leaks present.

How Is the Pool Cleaned?

If the pool has a visible bottom, your technician will vacuum the walls and brush them carefully. If the bottom isn't visible due to poor clarity, they may brush the walls first and allow the water to filter for at least a day before vacuuming. This will allow them to see the bottom more clearly. If necessary, they may shock the pool with more chlorine to clear it up.

Which Chemicals Are Added?

Maintenance chemicals are added first, such as pH and calcium, to restore the water’s proper balance. If you have a salt chlorine generator, the cell in the system will be cleaned with a specialty solution that's formulated to break down any scaly buildup that could otherwise prevent it from producing enough chlorine.
