Spring is here, and that can sometimes bring some wild weather. Major storms can sometimes pop up with little warning, leaving widespread damage in their wake. Even a relatively minor wind or rainstorm can cause damage to your car, though, thanks to flying debris, hail, and water. Taking steps to protect your car during bad weather can prevent damage that requires professional auto body repair.

How to Prevent Storm Damage to Your Car

1. Park Under Cover

If possible, park your car in the garage or under a carport when a storm is in the forecast. In a major weather event, you may be able to park your vehicle in a municipal or shopping center parking garage for the duration. Indoor or covered parking is the best defense against extensive damage.

2. Avoid Hazards

If you cannot park under cover, choose a safe place away from trees, power lines, and other hazards that could fall on the car, causing damage that requires auto body repair. Avoid parking in low-lying areas that could flood as well. If it's safe and there are no trees nearby, parking close to your home may help block some of the wind and provide protection against flying debris.

3. Use a Car Cover

Covering your car with a well-fitting cover can provide protection against scratches and dings caused by flying debris. Even in a hail storm, a cover can prevent paint damage that makes auto body repair more complex. If you don't have a car cover, a tarp or blankets can provide some protection, but be sure they are tight-fitting. High winds can cause them to flap or fly off.

4. Avoid Driving

When bad weather hits, avoid driving as much as possible. Poor visibility and wet roads increase the risk of a crash, which can cause major damage to your car that requires auto body repair. If you must drive, use caution and avoid driving through flooded roads. The water may be much deeper than you expect, which can flood your engine and cause damage. Adhere to flash flood warnings as well; rapidly rising water is dangerous and may carry the car away without warning.
