A rear-end auto collision is a scary experience, one that can result in significant body damage to your vehicle and potentially serious injuries. While many drivers feel helpless to prevent these types of accidents, there are some steps you can take to minimize your risk. Here are several ways to stay safer on the road.

How to Prevent a Rear-End Auto Collision

1. Allow Tailgaters to Pass You

While it's no secret that tailgaters are annoying, slowing down too much or slamming on your brakes in response can significantly increase your risk of a rear-end collision. If you feel the driver behind you is following too closely, simply let them pass. You can also change lanes to give them the space to drive away safely.

2. Use Your Turn Signals

Turning unexpectedly may surprise the driver behind you, who may not have enough time to slow down without hitting your vehicle. To avoid this type of rear-end collision, it's important to always use your turn signals to alert other drivers to your next move. This gives other motorists time to respond by slowing down or going around you. Get in the habit of using your signals whenever you make a turn, pull into a private driveway or parking spot, or take an exit on the interstate.

3. Don't Stop Short

In certain situations, sudden stops are necessary. However, if the driver behind you isn't paying close attention at the moment you stop, they may end up rear-ending your vehicle. To avoid this outcome, it's best to drive defensively by keeping your eyes on the road and anticipating red lights, stop signs, and slowed or stopped traffic. This will give you plenty of time to apply the brakes and come to a gradual stop.
