The presence of a coin jar in the home is nothing new, as many people use such jars to keep loose change in one place. If you have a coin jar, it could feature valuable pieces the local pawnshop will pay for. Below are some of the many valuable coins to learn about before heading to a pawnshop near you.

What Are Some of the Most Valuable Coins?

1. 2004 D Wisconsin Quarter, Extra Leaf Variety

There were 453 million quarters of this kind minted in 2004, each of which features an image of a cow, ear of corn, and round of cheese. Thousands of these quarters feature an extra leaf on the left side of the corn. This “error” may have been a purposeful act by a Mint employee, with both “high” and “low” leaf varieties available in light of the extra leaf’s placement. The 2004 D Wisconsin Quarter, Extra Leaf Variety sale prices range from $150 to $1,499.

2. 1969-S Lincoln Cent With a Doubled Die Obverse

One of the rarest pennies, this coin was originally steeped in controversy due to counterfeiters trying to replicate its double die appearance. However, it is easy to tell the real coin from fake versions, as faux varieties lack the correct mint mark. These coins feature “S” mint marks under the year they were made, 1969. They are typically worth thousands of dollars.

3. 2009 Kew Gardens 50P Coin

Perhaps your jar features foreign coinage, such as the 2009 50 pence piece celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens in London, England. Known as the Kew Gardens coin, only 210,000 were produced by the Royal Mint. All feature images of the Kew Gardens Pagoda, a gray brick, 10-story structure built in 1761 as a present to the gardens’ founder, Princess Augusta. The coin has sold for up to £150 on online auctions, or a little over $189.

4. 1982 No Mint Mark Roosevelt Dime

When this coin was created by the U.S. Mint, letters were used to designate the city in which they were made, such as “D” for Denver and “P” for Philadelphia. However, some of the dimes do not feature these mint marks, possibly because a disgruntled Mint employee decided to remove them. No matter why there are mint-less versions of this dime in circulation, one is usually worth between $30 and $50.
