Indoor playground equipment lets children run and play even when the weather isn’t cooperating, leading to stronger muscles and bones, improved flexibility and balance, stress relief, and weight management. Since safety is just as paramount for indoor equipment as it is for outdoor playgrounds, the following tips can help you keep your child safe while enjoying indoor fun.

How to Help Kids Safely Enjoy Indoor Playground Equipment

1. Provide Gentle Reminders

Before arriving at the family fun center, you can review playground safety, such as sliding down slides feet-first and refraining from jumping off swings to avoid fall-related injuries. You can also discuss playground etiquette that contributes to safe play, including not roughhousing with other children or jumping on drawstring bridges when others are crossing. Finally, reminding your child not to leave backpacks or shoes in high-traffic areas will prevent tripping hazards.

2. Dress Them in String-Free Clothes

Drawstrings or cords can get caught on indoor playground equipment and accidentally inflict injuries. Dressing your child in plain clothing prevents getting hurt by a tie string or jewelry getting caught on something. Most indoor playgrounds have a no-shoes policy, but you can use sneakers with Velcro instead of laces for any areas where shoes can be worn. This way, you'll avoid the chances of laces coming untied and getting stuck in equipment, causing your child to trip and fall.

3. Inspect for Equipment Hazards

You can check the playground for potential hazards before giving the ‘play go-ahead’ by looking for issues like exposed hardware, ladder rung or guardrail gaps, sections with loose anchors, and frayed rope swings. If you notice anything that requires addressing, you can alert the fun center manager and occupy your child with different activities until the issue is fixed.

4. Supervise

Even though indoor playgrounds are designed with safety in mind, it's always best to keep a watchful eye on your child while they play. Doing so lets you provide immediate help in the event of a bump, minor fall, or bruise. If you need to use the restroom or get something to eat, it's safest to have your child take a break and accompany you for a few moments. If a family member or friend is visiting the play center with you, let your child know you will be gone for a few minutes and point out who will be watching them, so they don’t wonder where you went or if they are under supervision.
