Whether you're repairing an old computer or designing a new one, you've probably come across the term "motherboard." This critical component allocates power to the various pieces of hardware, including the RAM, CPU, GPU, and monitor. It also facilitates communication between each piece of hardware by transmitting signals to and from them. The motherboard is the biggest board found within the chassis of both standard devices and custom-built computers

What Are Motherboards Made Of?

Motherboards are comprised of two main materials: copper and fiberglass. The copper forms conductive pathways, while the fiberglass provides insulation. To save space and shorten the distance that the electrons must travel–thereby increasing processing speed–the copper and fiberglass are stacked in layers.

Motherboards also contain holes that are drilled in strategic locations to accommodate various components. However, that doesn't mean that technicians should drill additional holes if they're building or upgrading your computer. If they strike one of the copper lanes, the entire circuit board will be deemed worthless because the connections will be interrupted.

How Are Motherboards Put Together?

To create a motherboard, professionals use thin slices of fiberglass and stack them together. They're adhered with resin to create a thicker, more solid layer. This thick layer of fiberglass is then coated in copper. A chemical called photoresist is applied to the copper, and it's covered with a unique pattern. When exposed to light, the photoresist etches the pattern onto the copper.

Smaller components are then soldered on by machine. Before mounting larger components like 24-pin connectors and input/output ports by hand, small capacitators are installed. Finally, the motherboard is inspected manually and then run through a series of tests to ensure quality control.
