Cobblestone driveways offer timeless charm, allowing your property to stand out by making a stunning visual impact. As with any feature on your property, these driveways require some general upkeep to maintain their beauty. Here are a few simple yet effective ways to care for your cobblestone.

A Guide to Cobblestone Driveway Maintenance

1. Clear Dirt, Debris & Mud

Before performing a deeper clean, start by sweeping away any loose dirt and debris on your driveway’s surface. Use a push broom to clear away gravel, dust, leaves, and twigs. Once all loose surface matter has been removed, hose the surface down.

It’s also possible for your driveway to have a layer of mud caked on from regular traffic. Since sweeping alone is unlikely to address stubborn mud, you’ll need to scrub it away. Grab a bucket and fill it with warm water and mild soap. Scrub the soapy water onto the driveway and allow it to sit for a few minutes before hosing it down.

2. Remove Stains

Besides mud, there may also be stains from gasoline, oil, and other automobile fluids on your cobblestone. If unsightly marks remain even after you’ve washed the surface with soap and water, apply a cleaner designed for stone. Products are available at home improvement stores and will come with specific instructions, so be sure to follow the directions on the container.

In a pinch, you can also use white vinegar to remove stains. Soak the stain and make sure the vinegar is evenly distributed. Allow it to sit for one hour, then distribute soap and water over the stone. Scrub gently to remove the stain and rinse the surface off thoroughly.

3. Weed Regularly

When cobblestone driveways are first constructed, they have sand between the stones that deters weed growth. Over time, the sand may begin to erode, allowing plant life to pop through. Kill any existing weeds with a chemical-free substance such as vinegar. Then, remove them from the root.

After you’ve eradicated all weeds, prevent them from returning with polymeric sand. Not only does this close the gaps between stones to keep weeds from coming through, but it also helps to hold pavers together so the driveway retains its shape and structural integrity.

Another important way to care for your driveway is through sealing, which protects its surface against the elements and daily wear and tear.
