The transmission, or gearbox, converts your engine's combustion power into power that turns the wheels. They typically have six or seven gears, and the transmission switches between these depending on the vehicle's speed and direction of motion. There are two main types of transmissions in engine repairs: manual and automatic.

Manual Transmissions

The manual transmission requires the driver to switch the transmission between gears. A clutch is sandwiched between a flywheel and pressure plate, which are connected to the engine. There are a clutch pedal and a gear shift inside the cabin.

The driver presses down on the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch from the engine, then moves the gear shift to the desired gear. When they take their foot off the pedal, the engine re-engages with the transmission in the new gear, changing the speed of travel.

The manual transmission is less complex than the automatic, which makes engine repairs on the transmission simpler and more affordable. They are also lighter since they don't have as many parts in them, which boosts your fuel efficiency; lighter cars have less weight to move, so they require less gas to travel. Many drivers also like feeling more connected to the engine. As they switch gears, they have complete control over their speed and power.

Automatic Transmissions

With an automatic transmission, the engine automatically switches between gears on its own without any control from the driver. Instead of a clutch, it uses hydraulic power with a torque converter. The engine monitors the speed of movement, and the pressurized fluid transfers power between the gears.

The biggest benefit of the automatic transmission is that it's easier to drive. It's what most young drivers learn on, and many drivers never learn how to drive with a manual transmission. It allows you to keep both hands on the wheel, which gives you better control over the vehicle.

Manual transmissions can be challenging to drive in heavy traffic in the city, as drivers have to switch between gears regularly. It's also challenging on hills, as the car rolls backward slightly in the time that the clutch is disengaged from the engine. As a result, the automatic transmission is better for people who drive in these conditions regularly.
