The effects of winter weather on your driveway can be fairly significant and detrimental to its appearance and functionality. As the combination of wet weather and low temperatures takes its toll on the pavement, it’s crucial to take precautionary measures to maintain the asphalt. Here are three suggestions for homeowners to keep in mind in order to preserve their driveways.

How to Maintain a Driveway in the Winter

1. Be Mindful of De-icing

While you might need to apply a de-icer to prevent slips and falls, it’s important to be mindful of the formula you use. Rock salt, or sodium chloride, is by far the most common option. However, it can be damaging to the surface because it increases the likelihood that water will melt into cracks and refreeze, causing those gaps to widen and leaving the asphalt worse for wear. Calcium chloride is a less harsh alternative that works even faster than rock salt, but if you want to avoid possible damage to your lawn, you might opt to combine salt and sand instead, as this combination will create traction and help with melting.

2. Fix Damaged Areas Early

Whether there are a few hairline cracks or a sizable pothole in your driveway, openings in the asphalt provide the perfect spot for moisture to accumulate. Whenever that moisture freezes, it can expand and widen the openings further, thus exacerbating the damage and leaving your driveway looking aged and unkempt. Plus, ground damage can prove a safety risk for pedestrians. To prevent further damage, schedule any necessary pavement repairs before the season’s first snowfall so that any issues are repaired by a professional.

3. Shovel the Snow Carefully

Although it’s good to remove the snow as soon as you can, avoid being too aggressive with your shovel, as you may accidentally damage the asphalt's appearance with unsightly scrapes and scratches. Instead, use a plastic shovel rather than a metal one, and be careful not to drag the edge along the pavement. As you scoop up the snow, avoid contact with the ground, and direct it away from the pavement.
