Electrolysis effectively removes hair from multiple areas of the body for smooth, supple skin. Taking the right aftercare steps ensures excellent results while reducing the risk of unwanted effects. Since electrolysis requires multiple sessions, you'll need to keep the following tips in mind before and after each appointment.

What Does Electrolysis Aftercare Entail?

1. Use Antibiotic Cream

It's normal for skin to be slightly irritated following the sessions. Applying an antibiotic cream facilitates faster healing and keeps infections at bay. While you should always consult the instructions on the box, you can apply most creams up to three times a day. Do this for a week after each session for the best results.

2. Apply an Anti-Itch Ointment

Itchiness is also common as the treatment area heals, with healing times varying from one week to 21 days. You can use an anti-itch ointment containing hydrocortisone to soothe inflammation during this period. Try to resist the urge to scratch so that you don't break the skin.

3. Keep Out of the Sun

Hyperpigmentation may occur in the treatment area if it's subjected to sun exposure during the 48 hours following electrolysis. In addition to sunlight, tanning beds can also cause skin discoloration.

If you must spend time in the sun, make sure you're well protected by SPF 30 sunscreen that offers broadspectrum protection that safeguards you against UVA and UVB rays. Reapply the sunscreen every two hours for ongoing protection.

4. Avoid Makeup Use

If the treatment area is on your face, avoid wearing makeup for 24 to 48 hours. Makeup can irritate the skin further and introduce bacteria to increase the infection risk. If you use makeup brushes, you'll need to thoroughly clean them so they can be safely used on the treated area once the 48 hours have passed.
